An empirical test of bet-hedging polyandry hypothesis in the field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus

چکیده

Abstract Theory shows that polyandry (mating with multiple males within a reproductive season) works as bet-hedging to increase the geometric mean fitness (GMF) of polyandrous genotype over generations and avoid extinction but it was rarely tested empirically. In this study, we distributed eggs Gryllus bimaculatus females mated 1–4 treatment) into 4 petri dishes different conditions: 25 °C/fresh water, 37 °C/salt simulating clutches laid at sites are suffered environmental change. The egg hatching rate obtained 7 blocks for each mating treatment. general, significantly more hatched in °C than fresh water salt water. failure (no per dish) frequently occurred monandry 2-male polyandry. Next, considered successive virtual calculated within-generation arithmetic (AMF) among same treatment between-generation GMF AMF across generations. Randomization test 3- 4-male were higher monandry. This study risk from only once can be avoided by bet-hedging.

New microsatellite loci isolated from the field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus characterized in two cricket species, Gryllus bimaculatus and Gryllus campestris.

We have developed a new set of 27 polymorphic markers for each of two cricket species, Gryllus bimaculatus and Gryllus campestris. Initially, 14 published G. bimaculatus loci were tested in G. campestris; however, only five loci were polymorphic. Therefore, we isolated an additional 50 new microsatellite loci from G. bimaculatus and tested these in both species. In a minimum of 20 individuals, ...

Olfactory learning in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus.

The olfactory learning capability of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus was studied. Crickets were deprived of drinking water for 4 days and were individually trained to associate peppermint with water and vanilla with NaCl solution. Their odour preference was tested before and after training by allowing them to choose between peppermint or vanilla sources. The time spent visiting each source serv...

Embryonic development of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus.

Extensive research into Drosophila melanogaster embryogenesis has improved our understanding of insect developmental mechanisms. However, Drosophila development is thought to be highly divergent from that of the ancestral insect and arthropod in many respects. We therefore need alternative models for arthopod development that are likely to be more representative of basally-branching clades. The...

Aggressive behavior in the antennectomized male cricket Gryllus bimaculatus.

Male crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) exhibit intensively defensive aggressive behavior towards attacking males most often culminating in fighting. After the fight, the loser no longer exhibits aggressiveness in a second, separate encounter with another male; rather, the defeated male exhibits avoidance behavior. Here, we investigated the role of sensory input from the antennae in male defensive ...

The role of neurohormonal octopamine during 'fight or flight' behaviour in the field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus.

Octopamine has been called the 'fight or flight' hormone of insects. We tested this hypothesis by measuring octopamine levels in the haemolymph of field crickets after fighting, flying, courting and escape behaviours. Octopamine levels in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus increased during aggressive (agonistic) behaviour from baseline levels of 4.5 +/- 2.1 pg microliters-1 haemolymph to 24.3 +/- ...
